Octagonal Spa Cover
Are you replacing a cover for your spa and have it available for measurement? If so, you can measure your old cover, as long as it is in decent condition and still lies flat. If you cannot use your old cover, measure directly from the tub. Read the instructions below, and be sure to view our exclusive video for detailed information. A true octagon has eight sides of equal length. This makes measurement easy. (Note: If your hot tub has eight sides, but the sides are not the same length, go to this page.) Like a square, you need only stretch your tape measure along one side of the tub to get the measurements of all sides. Next, measure across the tub, adding an extra inch of play to make sure that your new hot tub cover will fit securely over your spa. You may be wondering whether it makes a difference whether you should measure your new cover from the acrylic portion of the tub (from lip to lip) or from the wood rim. This depends upon whether you want your cover to extend over the wood cabinet, or whether you wish to have the cover fit just over the acrylic rim (see the diagram below). Either way, your cover will do its job, retaining the water temperature and protecting the tub. There’s one more important measure to consider: The skirt or flap that hangs down from the seam of the cover. It should hang straight down; otherwise, it could buckle and fold up, compromising the heat efficiency of your spa. Be sure that this skirt measures a good 3”, enough to cover the spa lip or cabinet rim (again, view the figure below). Bigger is always better when it comes to hot tub covers. If you aren’t sure if you took the measurements correctly, a good rule of thumb is to err on the side of the cover being a bit large. This way, you know your new cover will lie flat and hold in the heat.
